My main goal as a teacher is to help my students enter a state of intellectual agility. I see intellectual agility as the capacity to move fluidly between radically different perspectives on the world and assess them critically.
I try to instill the motivation to become intellectually agile in my students by endorsing an ideal of “arts in education” in my teaching. Agility, due to its very nature as an intellectual posture, cannot be developed in isolation from other people. Thus one of my main priorities as an educator is also to create a learning environment that is at once supportive and conducive to confronting and debating ideas.
